For all the bass players out there, bass tablature or bass tab is a form of musical notation that can be found on the internet. Instead of standard musical notation which is based on the rhythm and duration of each note, tablature is operationally based. Tablature indicates the placement of your finger to make a note and the duration is up to the performer more than in traditional music.
Bass tabs do not infringe on copyright laws because they are not derived from pre-printed material nor or they entirely accurate representations of the songs. Tabs are really an educational tool. It creates a better relationship between teacher and student. Students get an opportunity to play songs and types of music to suit their interests. In years past the beginning years of learning an instrument were largely comprised of boring repetitious scales and simple songs. It was often months before a student could attempt anything remotely interesting to them. In this sense, kids are much more likely to continue music lessons when they are motivated in this way. Some teachers create the tablature for the student to download based on what their interests are.
There are dozens of sites that allow bass tab downloads. Some are free and others charge a small amount for each download. Many of these sites also have lessons, live chats, and thousands of tabs done by all kinds of artists representing every style and genre of music. For example if you are a Led Zeppelin fan, you can get bass tabs of their songs. For a beginner or an experienced musician, this a great way to learn or expand your playing ability.
When I was in my twenties, I was in a bluegrass band. One of the members wanted to play bass and I know had this technology been available then, it would have been so much easier for her to learn. I am seriously thinking of using it now as a refresher. I have not played regularly in a few years and am finding that I miss it. Before I moved, I had my brothers to practice with. Now I don’t really have any friends who are musical, so this will be fun for me. There is tablature written for most stringed instruments as well as for harmonicas.
